location and species selection
Choose a maple species that suits your climate zone and available space. Maples are hardy trees that can survive a wide range of climates. Some species are better suited to certain conditions, though, so it’s best to check with an arborist or tree nursery expert for advice on the best options in your area. Likewise, maple species can vary from shrub-size Japanese maples to sugar maples that reach 75 ft (23 m) in height and 50 ft (15 m) in canopy spread, so choose a species that suits your available space

- Prepare the tree: Soak the roots to rehydrate the tree and prepare it for planting.
- Dig the hole: Dig a hole that’s twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth as the pot the tree came in.
- Prepare the soil: If the soil drains slowly, add peat moss or leaf compost to improve drainage.
- Position the tree: Place the tree in the hole so the top of the root ball is level with the soil.
- Fill the hole: Fill the hole with soil, tamping down to remove air pockets.
- Water: Water the tree thoroughly until water pools and then drains away.
- Add mulch: Apply a 2–4 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree.
When to plant
The best time to plant a maple tree is in the spring or fall. You can plant a maple tree at any time of year, but avoid planting in the winter.
Watering
Water the tree regularly during the first year. You can create a small well around the tree to make it easier to deep soak it.
Mulching
Mulch helps retain soil moisture and enriches the soil as it breaks down. You can use straw or tree bark mulch.
